Beekeeping

At the 2008 Royal Welsh Smallholder & Garden Festival, for the first time, B&RBKA in conjunction with the Welsh Beekeepers Association (WBKA) promoted an exciting and varied insight into the art and science of beekeeping.

Located on the balcony of the prestigious Floral Hall, the enlarged stand incorporated an observation hive that allowed the visitor to examine the heart of a community of bees in complete safety. Volunteers were available to point out different bee behaviours and processes going on, and there was great fun to be had ‘spotting the queen’.

A selection of DVD’s were screened on various aspects of beekeeping, and we invited you all to play our interactive bee quiz, guaranteed to test your knowledge of bees to the limits.

We also demonstrated the art of assembling flat pack hives ready for use in Spring. Female as well as male beekeepers of all ages took in this event, proof, that firstly, females can do DIY, and secondly that it can be a sociable, stress-free and fun event (and certainly easier than furniture!) If DIY is not your forte, our stand was also packed full of photographs and information about bees, beekeeping and events that we organise annually. We had leaflets and recipes to give out to the adults and stickers for our younger visitors. Most importantly of all, we had a selection of local honeys for tasting.

Staffed by beekeepers from throughout Wales, we enjoyed meeting you, and answering your questions about bees and beekeeping. We hope to see you again in 2009.
