Aberystwyth student wins RWAS Dr Richard Phillips prize
An award for students in memory of Dr Richard Phillips, a leading figure in agricultural education in Wales, has been won by Gareth Griffiths, a student at Aberystwyth University.
The award is made annually by the Royal Welsh Agricultural Society through the generosity of Dr Phillips’ family and is open to students graduating from the agricultural departments at Aberystwyth and Bangor universities. This year there were four candidates from Aberystwyth, where Dr Phillips once lectured, and one from Bangor, for the £150 prize.
The students are pre-selected by the heads of the agricultural departments and the final selection is based on an appraisal of the student’s personality, practical knowledge of agriculture and its application, depth of knowledge of the agricultural sciences, the economic implications and the role of agriculture in the future.
The winning student will be presented with the award on the opening day of the four-day Royal Welsh Show at Llanelwedd, Builth Wells, on Monday, July 18.
As winner Gareth Griffiths will be invited to write an article for publication in the 2012 Royal Welsh Journal of which Dr Phillips was a former editor.
