Big cash awards for Winter Fair champions

Additional cash awards worth thousands of pounds in prize money will again be on offer to winners in the livestock classes at the 2010 Royal Welsh Winter Fair at Llanelwedd, Builth Wells, next month.

The exhibitor of the supreme champion beast will take home the top award of £500.  However, cash incentives of up to £1000 offered by several cattle breed societies if the supreme winner turns out to be a pedigree animal registered by one of those societies, or is the progeny of a sire of the particular breed society offering the prize, will boost the winner’s total to £1500.

Eight breed societies are each putting up these £1000 prizes and a number of cash incentives ranging from £10 to £500 from other societies will also be available to winning exhibitors as long as they conform to the conditions stipulated by the individual society involved.

A number of sheep breed societies are also incentivising their members to compete at the Winter Fair.  The British Charollais Sheep Society is offering £500 if the supreme champion sheep is sired by a Charollais ram while the Suffolk Society is putting up £250 for the supreme champion if sired by a Suffolk plus another £250 in the carcass section if the supreme champion carcass is by a Suffolk.

This year there will be 20 classes and special awards for pigs with cash prizes of £50 for the best pair and £50 for the supreme champion single pig.  The reserve winners will each receive £20.

Horses and ponies, introduced at the Fair in 2001, are now a popular attraction and 34 classes and specials have been scheduled for the event which takes place on November 29 and 30.  The most coveted awards in the section are the Welsh championship for the best Welsh pony or cob at the Winter Fair and the supreme championship for the best horse exhibit.  The top prizes for each of the championship winners is £100 with £50 for the reserves.

The Winter Fair, established in 1990, is regarded as one of the world’s best exhibitions of prime stock.  It is also a popular venue for urban visitors which last year attracted an attendance of 26,058, the second highest in the history of the event.
