Eight farm workers get RWAS Long Service Medals
Eighty-one year old Robert Henry Williams of Llangedwyn, near Oswestry, who has worked on Sir Wakin Williams-Wynn’s Llangedwyn Estate, Plas y Cefn, St Asaph, Denbighshire, for 55 years, is one of eight farm and estate workers in Wales who will be presented with Long Service Medals at the Royal Welsh Show. Between them they have completed 355 years service on the land and, as with Mr Williams, five of those receiving medals have spent all or most their working lives with the same employer.
The oldest recipient, William David Griffiths, aged 86, of Henllan, Lampeter, Ceredigion, has worked for 49 years for the late Mr and Mrs J H Jones and H B Jones of Penefedw, Brongest.
Dafydd Glyn Williams of Rhosgadfan, Caernarfon, has completed 44 years with two employers, the last 30 years at Coleg Meirion-Dwyfor Glynllifon, while John Trefor Beattie Jones of Nantgwynant, Beddgelert, Gwynedd, has worked on three different farms during his 43 years on the land.
Eric Owen Davies of Dihewydd, Lampeter, and Clement Martin Lloyd, of Llandysil, Montgomery, Powys, have both been with the same employers for most of their working lives – Mr Davies with D T H Jones at Brynhog Home Farm, Felinfach, Lampeter, for 42 years, and Mr Lloyd on the staff of A H Jones’ farm, Court Calmore, Montgomery, also for 42 years.
Another employee at Court Calmore, David Michael Pryce of James Ford, Montgomery, Powys, has been working there for 40 years and Hugh Lowe has been employed for 40 years since leaving school at 15 to join the late Robert Williams and Mrs D M Williams at Rossa Fawr, Prion Road, Denbigh.
Royal Welsh Long Service Medals were introduced 55 years ago. Twenty-nine were presented when the show visited Rhyl in 1956 and since then scores of farm workers have become proud possessors of the award.
