Flypast planned for Royal Welsh Show

A flypast by the only airworthy Lancaster bomber left in Britain will take place at this year’s Royal Welsh Show – weather permitting.

This will be the second attempt to arrange the flypast in memory of Richard (Dick) Moseley who was honorary treasurer of the Royal Welsh Agricultural Society for nearly 40 years.  On the last occasion the flight had to be cancelled because of the weather.

As an 18 year-old Dick Moseley was rear gunner in a Lancaster of RAF Bomber Command’s 218 Gold Coast Squadron flying with the same seven-man crew on 32 missions over industrial and military targets.  Together they clocked 177 hours of combat flying mainly in daylight raids over Germany.

The 1944 crew became known as “The Magnificent Seven” and it is hoped the surviving members will be present to watch the flypast and take the salute.  It is also hoped that Mr Moseley’s wife, Ellen, son Ian, and daughter Gill, will be present on this special occasion.

Dick Moseley died in 2007 aged 82.  He had been honorary treasurer of the RWAS since 1968 and was only the sixth person to hold the office since the formation of the society in 1904.  He was awarded the Royal Welsh Gold Medal in 1994 and became an honorary Life Vice President in 2004.

Subject to the weather being favourable, the planned flypast will take place at 2.45pm on the second day, Tuesday July 19, of the four-day show at Llanelwedd, Builth Wells, from July 18-21.
