Former head of ADAS in Wales honoured

Chris Horne of Golden Grove, Carmarthen, an agricultural adviser for nearly 50 years and a former Head of ADAS in Wales, has been made an Associate of the Royal Agricultural Societies.

During a long and influential career with ADAS he served in Devon, Wales and East Anglia, and was responsible for all ADAS international work particularly in Eastern Europe.  When ADAS was privatised in 1997, he helped in the transformation of the service from a public sector body to a commercially successful company becoming Operations Director for Wales and the West for two years before being appointed Director of the Agricultural Division covering England and Wales.  He retired in 2000.

In the same year Mr Horne obtained a contract from the Jersey government to carry out a study of the production and marketing of Jersey Royal potatoes and later was asked to examine the structure of the island’s Ministry of Agriculture and to make recommendations.

In 2001 he was re-employed by ADAS to set up a foot and mouth vaccination centre in North Devon, one of the worst affected areas during the epidemic, and in 2003 he became involved with Farming Connect to provide development plans for farmers.

For the past seven years he has been a member of the Independent Appeals Panel for Farmers in Wales.  He is a member of Carmarthen Chamber of Agriculture and is Assistant Honorary Director of the Country Pursuits, Countryside Care and Sports Village areas of the Royal Welsh show.
