Montgomeryshire farmer wins Royal Welsh bursary

A 35 year-old hill farmer from Montgomeryshire has been awarded a Royal Welsh Agricultural Society bursary to represent the society at the prestigious 2010 Oxford Farming Conference.

Richard Tudor who farms a 700 acre upland holding stocked with 1000 breeding ewes, 300 ewe lambs and 120 suckler cows at Llanerfyl, near Welshpool, was one of five candidates for the bursary and he will attend the conference in January.

The Royal Welsh bursary was introduced nine years ago and is open to candidates between 25 and 35 years of age who must be working in a land-based industry.  The judges for this year’s bursary award praised the candidates for their open and lively personalities and forthright opinions and for demonstrating ‘capabilities beyond their years’.  Any one of them could have ably represented the society at the conference, they said.

The Oxford Farming Conference is an event known worldwide for its contribution to progressive ideas on current issues affecting agriculture.  Every year it attracts leading figures from farming and related industries and the agri-political field.

This year’s winner of the bursary will be asked to write an article for inclusion in the 2010 issue of the RWAS Journal and will be presented with the award at the Royal Welsh Winter Fair which takes place at Llanelweddd, Builth Wells, on November 30 – December 1.
