National grassland event for Breconshire
Breconshire will be the feature county at this year’s Royal Welsh Show in July and the 2012 President of the Royal Welsh Agricultural Society, John Davies, will host a major national grassland event focussing on how farmers can meet the challenges of food production and climate change.
Grass is the most important crop in the economy of Welsh agriculture and farmers from across Wales and other grass-growing areas of the country are expected at the event which will be staged on 100 acres of the President’s farm at Pentre, Merthyr Cynog. It will feature plots of varieties of grasses with technical demonstrations by the Institute of Biological, Environmental and Rural Sciences (IBERS), Aberystwyth University, and various methods of grass conservation. Major manufacturers of agricultural machinery will be demonstrating equipment used for hay and silage making and although it is taking place on a beef and sheep farm in Mid Wales, the event will be of particular interest to dairy farmers who rely extensively on the production and conservation of grassland crops.
Other attractions will include a high-speed shearing contest and a speakers forum is also planned with a question and answer session.
Because the event coincides with school half-term holidays there will be special attractions for children making it a day out for all the family.
