New President of Royal Welsh

One of the best cattlemen of his generation in Wales and a leading fund raiser for charitable causes, Trebor Edwards of Pen y Bryniau, Bettws GG, has been elected President of the Royal Welsh Agricultural Society for 2008.  He will hold the office when Conwy, Denbighshire, Wrexham and Flintshire are featured at the Royal Welsh Show.

Aged 58, Trebor Edwards has successfully exhibited cattle at many of the UK’s leading shows including the Royal Welsh and the Winter Fair where he won the supreme championship in 2000.

On the wider stage, however, he is best known for his rich tenor voice and he has sung before audiences around the world and given many performances in aid of various charities.  Originally a dairy farmer he switched to beef and sheep production in the 1970s so that he could devote more time to singing.

He won a number of competitions for one of which the prize was to make a recording of his voice. His career as a singer – which he started together with his father, grandfather, and three sisters – quickly progressed and he has made many recordings since including five gold records with sales in excess of 100,000 as well as 9 CDs.  He is also a well known TV personality and has performed many times on television including in the series ‘Trebor Edwards’ on HTV.

Mr Edwards started farming aged 16 after taking over his grandfather’s farm.  He built up the holding from 165 to 600 acres plus 380 acres on Llandegla Moor and a further 140 acres of lowland grazing.  He and his wife, Ann, have four children, three of whom are on the family farm.

Mrs Kate Thomas of Nelson, the Lord Lieutenant of Mid Glamorgan, is the new President-elect of the RWAS.  She will take over in 2009 when Glamorgan will be the feature county at the Royal Welsh Show.  She is the fifth woman to become President since the society was formed in 1904.
