Poultry Show at Royal Welsh Spring Festival

The Poultry Club of Wales has created three major annual poultry shows since it was formed in 1994.  They are staged on the Royal Welsh showground and the opening show for 2012 takes place at the Royal Welsh Spring Festival in May.

The club was originally set up to foster and encourage poultry breeding and exhibiting in Wales and its spring show at Llanelwedd was founded in an attempt to reverse the trend of recent years of shutting down some of the long established local shows.

In that aim it has succeeded.  The show attracts over 600 entries many of whom are in the juvenile and junior age bracket, enthusiastic young poultry fanciers who, through their interest in breeding and exhibiting, are ensuring that many old breeds of poultry will continue to thrive.

The club is able to manage its events at Llanelwedd at a fraction of the cost of other major shows through its partnership with the Royal Welsh Agricultural Society.  Together they were successful in a joint application to the Welsh Government for grant aid to purchase their own set of poultry cages which are used at all three major events at Builth Wells.

This year’s opening poultry show takes place on Saturday May 19, the first day of the two-day Spring Festival.  Anyone contemplating taking up poultry keeping will find there is a wide variety of breeds to see at the event from traditional British breeds to those which originated in countries around the world.

Breeding and exhibiting poultry is a worldwide hobby enjoyed by people of all ages and many backyard poultry keepers have enjoyed the thrill of winning a championship.  There are classes for poultry and waterfowl at the Festival and exhibitors from Wales and beyond will be hoping to see their bird win one of the leading awards.

As in many of the other sections of the Festival experienced enthusiasts will be on hand to help and advise potential fanciers and there will be a Poultry Club Corner where guidance on all aspects of poultry keeping will be available.
