Royal Welsh £2000 prize for best stockman
Nominations are being sought throughout Wales for this year’s £2000 prize from the Royal Welsh Agricultural Society given in memory of Dr Emrys Evans, a former chairman of the society’s board of management. The prize is sponsored by HSBC Bank.
The once in a lifetime prize is offered annually to people who have contributed in an exceptional way to rural skills. The candidates are nominated by the county advisory committees of the RWAS and must be under 35 years of age on the first day of the Royal Welsh Show in July. They must also live in the county they represent although they may work elsewhere.
The theme chosen for the 2008 competition is stockman’s skills. The judges will be assessing nominees for their skills in the breeding and feeding of cattle, the selection of stock, preparation of animals for markets and shows and for such routine activities as foot trimming, dehorning, dosing medicines, inoculation, and recording performance.
Dr Evans was a Royal Welsh gold medallist. He served on the society’s board for 32 years and died on the eve of the centenary Royal Welsh Show in 2004.
