RWAS – Dr Emrys Evans Award for Brecon competitor
Geraint Davies of Dan yr Eglwys, Garthbrengy, Brecon, is the winner of the Royal Welsh Agricultural Society’s 2010 Dr Emrys Evans Award, a £2000 prize given annually to a person who has made an exceptional contribution to rural skills.
The theme chosen for the award this year was shepherding skills and the winner was one of 11 competitors from across Wales nominated for the prize. They were assessed for their skills in animal husbandry, veterinary record keeping, shearing ability, working with sheepdogs and preparing sheep for market or the show ring.
In their report the judges said that while travelling around Wales and interviewing
the candidates for the award it soon became apparent that all of them were very able ambassadors in the sector.
“We had the pleasure of visiting a cross section of farms and breeds of sheep and the optimism expressed in the future was both infectious and gratifying and made our brief worthwhile,” they said.
In the final assessment the judges came to the unanimous decision that Geraint Davies was ‘a very worthy winner’. He will be presented with the prize of £2000, a certificate and an item of Welsh Royal Crystal, during the Royal Welsh Show.
The coveted award is made annually in memory of Dr Emrys Evans who was chairman of the Royal Welsh board of management. He died in 2004 on the eve of the Royal Welsh centenary show. The award was introduced in 2006 and is sponsored by HSBC Bank of which Dr Evans was Director for Wales.
