RWAS – Dr Richard Phillips award for Aberystwyth student

An award for students in memory of Dr Richard Phillips, a leading figure in agricultural education in Wales, has been won by Jamie McCoy, a graduate of the Department of Agriculture at the University of Wales, Aberystywth.

The award is made annually by the Royal Welsh Agricultural Society through the generosity of Dr Richard Phillips’ family and is open to students graduating from any of the agricultural departments of the University of Wales.  Each university can submit up to four students of agriculture or related subjects for the £150 prize and accompanying certificate, and this year’s candidates were all graduates from Aberystwyth.

The students are pre-selected by their department heads and the final selection is based on an appraisal of the student’s personality, practical knowledge of agriculture and its application, depth of knowledge of the agricultural sciences, the economic implications and the role of agriculture in the future.

Miss McCoy will be presented with the award on the opening day of the four-day Royal Welsh Show at Llanelwedd, Builth Wells, on Monday, July 20.

As winner she will be invited to write an article for publication in the 2010 Royal Welsh Journal of which Dr Phillips was a former editor.
