RWAS – Dr Richard Phillips Student Award prize winners
An award for students in memory of Dr Richard Phillips, doyen of agricultural education in Wales and a prominent figure in Welsh agricultural cooperation, has been won this year by two young women students at Bangor and Aberystwyth.
The award, made possible through the generosity of Dr Phillips’s family, is given annually by the Royal Welsh Agricultural Society and is open to students graduating from the Agricultural Departments of the University of Wales.
Students are pre-selected by their department heads and each university is entitled to submit up to four students of agriculture or related subjects. The final selection is based on an appraisal of the student’s personality, practical knowledge of agriculture and its application, depth and knowledge of the agricultural sciences, and the economic implications and role of agriculture in the future.
The 2008 winners are graduates Beth Harrison, a student at Aberystwyth, and Kate Linck, who studied at Bangor.
There were eight candidates for the award which will be presented to the winners on the opening day of the four day Royal Welsh Show, Monday July 21, at Llanelwedd, Builth Wells.
