RWAS – Dr Richard Phillips Student Award winner
An award for students in memory of Dr Richard Phillips, a prominent figure in agricultural education in Wales and in the development of agricultural cooperation, has been won this year by Lowri A Davies, a student at Aberystwyth University where Dr Phillips was a leading academic.
The £150 award is given annually through the generosity of Dr Phillips’ family and is open to students graduating from the Agricultural Departments of the University of Wales.
Students are pre-selected by their department heads and each university can submit up to four students of agriculture or related subjects. The final selection of the winner is based on an appraisal of the student’s personality, technical knowledge of agriculture and its application, depth of knowledge of the agricultural sciences and the economic implications and role of agriculture in the future.
There were six candidates for the award this year, three from Aberystwyth and three from Bangor University, and the winner will be presented with the prize on the first day of the Royal Welsh Show at Llanelwedd, Builth Wells.
The recipient will be required to write an article for publication in the 2011 Royal Welsh Journal, of which Dr Phillips was a former editor.
