RWAS Grassland Trophy goes to Anglesey farmers

A poor spring and a prolonged period of dry weather has made the growing of lush and productive crops of grass in Wales particularly difficult this year.  Nevertheless, the annual All-Wales Grassland Farming Competition run by the Royal Welsh Agricultural Society in conjunction with the Federation of Welsh Grassland Societies, led to keen competition among some of the best grassland farmers in the country.

The competition has been won by Messrs Peredur & Llyr Hughes of Llandeusant, Holyhead, Anglesey, who are members of the Anglesey Grassland Society.

They were selected from the four finalists for the Federation’s Perpetual Trophy which they will receive on the opening day of the Royal Welsh Show.  They will also be sponsored to attend the British Grassland Society’s annual summer meeting.

The joint runners-up this year, who will receive a prize of £50, were Neil Perkins of Dinas Island Farm, Newport, Pembrokeshire, a member of the North Pembrokeshire Grassland Society, and P & B Williams of Greenway Farm, Llanhamlach, Brecon, who are members of the Brecon Grassland Society.

The judges said the competition produced some close results but the winners’ attention to detail on soil and manure management and integration alongside environmental opportunities together with exceptional quality livestock from grass, gave them the edge.

The competition is sponsored by HSBC Bank.
