RWAS Long Service Medals for farm workers
Eight farm and estate workers from across Wales will receive Royal Welsh Agricultural Society Long Service Medals at the Royal Welsh Show later this month. Between them they have completed 252 years service on the land, of which a combined total of 100 years have been achieved by two men – Wynn Jones of Grove Road, Denbigh, and Haydn Rees Parry, of Clynderwen, Pembrokeshire. Each has spent half a century as farm workers.
Wynn Jones, aged 64, has been employed for his entire working life by R G Hughes of Brookhouse Farm, Denbigh, while Haydn Parry, also 64, worked for 32 years for the late D Ll Davies & Partners, and 18 years for Messrs G & A S Davies of Penrallt & Fferm y Capel, Mynachlogddu, Clynderwen.
Sixty-two year old Daniel Owen Davies of Tregynnwr, Caerfyrddin, has worked on the land for 47 years, 43 of them for Mrs M J Jones and the late D R Jones, at Ty Llwyd, Mawr, Llangynnwr, Caerfyrddin.
Although not working directly on the land 68 year old Robert Vivian Henry Davies of Ruthin, has been closely involved with the farming industry for the 43 years in which he has been employed by Ruthin Farmers Auction Company Ltd in conjunction with Clough & Co Auctioneers at Ruthin.
Alan Lloyd of Trallong, Brecon, has worked for three employers during his 42 years as a farm worker, the past 37 years for P M Davies & Son of Abersefin, Brecon, and of Evanjobb, Presteigne, Powys.
Three of those who will receive Long Service Medals this year have each worked for 40 years on the land: David Warren Alfred Clayton, aged 57, at St Dials Farm, Monmouth, for the late D Cowles and T G & E M Hart & Son; John Parry, aged 63, of Abergynolwyn, Meirionnydd, has been employed for 37 of his 40 years by J Lewis of Llanfihangel, Tywyn; and, the youngest recipient, Norman Eric Williams, aged 55, who has had two employers – the late Colonel E Williams-Wynne, and Harry Fetherstonhaugh at Coed Coch Home Farm, Dolwen, Abergele, Conwy, for 30 years.
Eric Williams, a shepherd, is the third generation of his family to receive the RWAS Long Service Medal. His father, Robert, a woodsman, received his medal in 1984, and his grandfather, William, who was also a woodsman, was presented with the award in 1951.
