Schedules out for Royal Welsh Show
Nearly 1300 classes and special awards are listed in the livestock schedule for this year’s Royal Welsh Show in July which has just gone out to 4500 potential exhibitors.
Twenty-one cattle breeds have been scheduled for the four-day event with 240 classes and special awards for 18 beef breeds and 60 for dairy animals. Prizes of £1000 are being offered for the supreme champion dairy cow and the supreme champion dairy heifer with £500 going to the reserves. There will be a special competition for young cattle handlers in both beef and dairy sections with prizes of £100 each to the winners.
The Royal Welsh is famous for its display of sheep breeds, the largest to be seen anywhere in the world, and this year 44 breeds will line up for judging. Because of the large numbers of sheep entered at the show – last year there were over 3000 – entries are being restricted so that they can all be accommodated in the space available in the sheep section of the showground.
Welsh ponies and cobs are another major attraction at the Royal Welsh and their spectacular display in the main ring draws visitors from around the world. This year 376 classes and special awards are listed in the horse section covering a variety of breeds from little Shetlands to majestic Shires. The show is a qualifier for the Shire Horse of the Year championship to be held at the NEC in Birmingham in October.
A class for retrained race horses appears in the schedule this year for the first time. It is open to thoroughbreds which have raced and includes a special rosette for the highest placed veteran racehorse aged 15 years or over.
The schedule lists 63 classes and special awards for pigs including those for Welsh, British Saddlebacks and other traditional and modern breeds.
The goat section has classes for dairy breeds and Angoras and an Angora Fleece competition.
The schedule and entry forms are also available online (www.rwas.co.uk) and the closing date for entries is April 27.
The four-day Royal Welsh Show takes place at Llanelwedd, Builth Wells, from
July 18 – 21.
