Strong entries for Winter Fair
The Royal Welsh Winter Fair, widely acclaimed as Britain’s finest prime stock show, has again attracted an impressive number of entries for the two-day event at Llanelwedd, Builth Wells, on December 1 and 2.
In the cattle section, entries at 310, are only just short of last year’s record numbers. They have been boosted by substantial increases in the entries of baby beef steers and heifers, the classes for which are a source of top quality animals with show potential. At 51, baby steer entries are up by 13 on last year while baby heifers have increased from 34 to 58.
Cross-bred cattle will also provide plenty of interest for ringsiders, entries in the steer classes totalling 81 and those for heifers standing at 66.
The entries for lambs (pairs) are also up on the 2007 figure reaching 345, an increase of 62, and in the lamb carcass competition, always a popular feature at the Fair, there are 129 entries of singles and 34 pairs.
Pig entries are also up this year totalling 78.
Entries in the horse and pony section number 639 and are the highest since 2004. As in previous years since horse classes were introduced at the Fair in 2001, Welsh Mountain ponies lead the entry figures with 168. Welsh cobs are also in the three figure bracket with 111 entries. The popularity of Welsh ponies of cob type is reflected by entries of 96.
