Top RWAS Awards for 2012
The Royal Welsh Agricultural Society’s most prestigious prize, the Sir Bryner Jones Memorial Trophy, will go this year to an auctioneer who has made a substantial contribution to the development of livestock marketing in his or her area.
This will be the first time for the once-in-a-lifetime award to be offered to a member of the auctioneering profession since it was introduced in 1957.
The award is made annually to someone from a different branch of agriculture in Wales who has attained the highest level of achievement in the chosen sector.
Nominations for the prize are made by the Royal Welsh county advisory committees throughout Wales and the closing date for entries is April 2 2012.
Sir Bryner Jones was Agriculture Commissioner for Wales in 1912 and subsequently he became Welsh Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture. He shaped the direction of the RWAS for 50 years and was president of the society during its Golden jubilee year in 1954.
Nominations are also being sought for another major Royal Welsh prize, the Dr Emrys Evans Award, given annually to a person who has contributed in an exceptional way to rural skills. Competitors must be under 35 years old and will be assessed on their skills at dry stone walling, fencing, hedge laying, gate making and erecting, and tree planting.Dr Evans was chairman of the Royal Welsh board of management. He died on the eve of the Royal Welsh Centenary Show in 2004 and the award was introduced in his memory in 2006.
