Welsh shearers on winning form

Sheep shearers who will represent Wales at the World Shearing Championships at next month’s Royal Welsh show are in sparkling form for the event having just won the Machine and Blade Shearing Tests at the prestigious All-Ireland International Shearing and Woolhandling Championships at Portlaoise.
Gareth Evans and Gareth Daniel were victors in the Machine Shearing Test beating off tough opposition from several top international competitors and Gareth Daniel went on to achieve second place in the Open Championship with Gareth Evans coming fourth.
John Till who with Elfed Jackson comprise the Welsh Blade team for the world event at Llanelweddd, won the Blade Shearing Test which was also a hotly-contested trial, and Elfed Jackson crowned their success by winning the Open Blade Championship as well. Woolhandler Bronwen Tango, from Monmouthshire, who will also represent Wales at the World Championships, won the All-Ireland Woolhandling Competition.
Welsh competitors were also in the lead at the Six Nations Shearing Competition at the Royal Bath and West Show. Formerly known as the Five Nations (England, Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland) the competition was expanded this year to accommodate France who took part for the first time. The French and the other competitors were not strong enough, however, to overcome the team of Gareth Evans, Nicky Beynon and Andrew Morris, who claimed first place for Wales. Gareth Daniel achieved fifth place in the Golden Shears Open Championship. In the woolhandling competition Bronwen Tango was placed second and Welsh team member Meinir Evans was fourth.
