The Society acknowledges with thanks the Sponsorship of the Flint and Denbigh Hunt Pony Club Musical Display by

Owain and Henry IV

The Flint & Denbigh Hunt branch of the Pony Club is a very busy group and there are competitions, rallies and all sorts of exciting activities held for its lucky members in and around the beautiful Vale of Clwyd.   Founded just over 50 years ago, it has produced its fair share of riders who have gone on to ‘better’ things.   As Clwyd is this year’s featured county – the pony club branch is proud to be able to contribute.   Approximately 48 riders, aged between 6 and 16, have been training since January in all weathers for this occasion.

The idea developed from a simple English v Welsh Musical ride into a token representation of the feud between the English and Welsh Royal Houses and for this display, it is between Owain Glyndwr and Henry IV from the 1400’s.

Owain was a remarkable military leader – a unique figure held in great esteem throughout Wales.  He was crowned Prince of Wales in Harlech Castle and history connects him with many places in North Wales including St Asaph and Ruthin in the Vale of Clwyd.  More myths and legends are written about Owain than about Arthur himself.

Henry IV – who was a Welshman anyway – was the last man to win the English crown by the sword.  There is no record of Owain’s death. He vanished into the mists of Snowdonia – so it is written - ready to return if Wales was in trouble.

The display to music is in three sections:-

•    Camp manoevres by the two separate armies.

•    A battle complete with rubber swords!

•    United movements to music.

The Flint and Denbigh Pony Club would like to take this opportunity to thank Meg Green, who has devised, explained and overseen this whole operation, Bethan Jones, our DC for her support and long suffering and also the Welsh College of Horticulture, Northop and Lloc Showground for providing us with Practice Grounds.
