Ceredigion yn codi £400,000 ar gyfer y Sioe Frenhinol

Supporters in Ceredigion have raised the record sum of around £400,000 for the Royal Welsh Agricultural Society’s feature county fund.  The unprecedented amount easily surpasses the generous contributions made by other counties in Wales since the feature county concept was introduced in 1963 to help finance the development of the Royal Welsh showground.

Ceredigion’s fund-raising efforts were led by the 2010 Royal Welsh president, Dai Jones of Llanilar, Aberystwyth, one of Wales’ best-known farmers and broadcasters.  The fund is not yet closed however.  A picture – which is a montage of images from the Royal Welsh Show and the county of Ceredigion by the Welsh figurative painter Aneurin Jones, prints of which have already raised £32,000 for the fund – is to be auctioned together with print number 100 on January 8 during a ‘last supper’ for fundraisers at the village of Pontrhydfendigaid.

The record figure was revealed by the chairman of the Royal Welsh board of management, David Lewis, at a meeting of the society’s Council at Builth Wells.  Ceredigion’s incredible efforts had made an immense contribution to another successful year for the society, he said.

The Royal Welsh feature county system is unique.  Introduced by Radnorshire 47 years ago it proved so successful that the formula was established and each year the show features a different county by rotation, each county providing a president for the year and staging local events and activities to raise money for building projects and other developments on the showground.  The system has also created a bridge between the counties and the Royal Welsh and a ring of friendship between the people of Wales which manifests itself at the annual show.
