Three hundred classes and special awards have been scheduled for a new spring show to be staged by the Poultry Club of Wales at this year’s Smallholder and Garden Festival.
The Poultry Club of Wales was formed to promote the hobby of breeding and showing and the Royal Welsh showground at Llanelwedd, Builth Wells, is now the leading venue for the club’s events. The new show will be held in the showground’s Fur and Feather Pavilion on Saturday, May 15, the first day of the two-day Festival.
“The club is anxious to portray the hobby of poultry breeding and showing as an interesting and fascinating pastime for young and old alike and this will be a wonderful opportunity for poultry enthusiasts and town and country dwellers to see a wide variety of breeds of poultry and waterfowl, all exhibited in the pink of condition,” said Huw Thomas, president of the Poultry Club of Wales.
The show will be held under the rules of the Poultry Club of Great Britain which was founded over 130 years ago to safeguard the interests of all pure and traditional breeds of poultry in this country and throughout the world and shows like this one at the Festival are playing a crucial role in protecting irreplaceable stock bloodlines which have been maintained for generations.
Dozens of breeds will be on view many with long histories behind them for domestic poultry were commonly kept throughout the ancient world thousands of years ago. A visit to the poultry show is an international experience with its exotic breeds originating in many countries – India, China, Holland, Italy, France, Australia and Chile among them.
The show also has classes for novices and young competitors.
