Ymgyrch newydd i fynd i'r afael â'r broblem sbwriel yn Sioe Frenhinol Cymru

A contract for the collection and recycling of waste from the showground at Llanelwedd, Builth Wells, during the Royal Welsh Show, has been awarded to Powys County Council by the RWAS.

With more than 200,000 visitors over four days, the event generates around 200 tons of refuse and the society, conscious of the need to minimise the impact of waste on the environment, invited tenders for its collection and removal from the site in an efficient and cost and energy-effective way.

Litter picking will also be carried out under a separate arrangement by parents and pupils of Builth Wells High School who will collect rubbish and place cans and plastic bottles into separate bags on the 150 acre showground, and take it to main collection points for removal.

“We developed the specification for 2010 to embrace a more comprehensive and responsible manner for the collection, handling, disposal and re-use of waste and potential waste resource,” said Royal Welsh Assistant Company Secretary, Caron W Evans.  “We are working to improve our environmental agenda and see this as a big step forward.  We are please to be working with the council and to be supporting the community through the school.”

As well as litter left by people visiting the show, waste also accumulates from the 1000 trade stands, the 16 static catering outlets which have seating for 3000 diners, and five picnic sites served by mobile catering vans.  There are also more than 1300 caravans parked on and around the showground during the week of the show.

As the waste management contractor, Powys County Council will provide over 300 bins which will be labelled for general use or for recyclable material such as cans, plastic or paper.  There will also be daily collections of glass, and cardboard, from stallholders on the showground.

The refuse vehicles will be in use on the showground but they will avoid moving around congested areas at peak times.  After collection the waste will be transported to a licensed waste transfer depot near Brecon for onward disposal or reprocessing.
