Ill health as a teenager and the untimely death of his father led to the sale of the family holding and robbed Gwynne Davies of Llandewi Brefi, Tregaron,
Ceredigion, who is the latest person in Wales to become an Associate of the Royal Agricultural Societies, of his chances of being a farmer. Instead, he became an electrician and, spotting a niche in the market, used his knowledge and skills as an electrical and television engineer, to provide a sound and loudspeaker service at many agricultural shows in Wales.
At the same time, as a member of the YFC he developed his abilities as a public speaker and was soon being engaged as a commentator at shows and exhibitions in Wales, including at the Royal Welsh Show, the Winter Fair and the Smallholder and Garden Festival.
However, his dream of one day fulfilling his ambition to be a farmer persisted. He obtained a job as an area secretary with the Farmers Union of Wales and by sheer hard work and perseverance he overcame many obstacles and was able to buy the 100 acre local Godre Garth Farm where he produces prize-winning sheep from North Country Cheviot and Beltex flocks.
Through his lifelong active involvement with the YFC movement he became chairman of the National Federation of YFCs in 1987 and he is now Vice-President of the National Federation. He is also a council member of the National Sheep Association, the North Country Sheep Association, the National Sheep Association Cymru and the NSA Wales and Border Ram Sale Committee.
Among his many other appointments he is a member of the board of management of the Royal Welsh Agricultural Society, a member of the society’s livestock and Winter Fair committees, and chairman of the Royal Welsh Show advisory committee for Ceredigion.
