Galw am enwebiadau ar gyfer prif wobrau'r Sioe Frenhinol

Veterinary surgeons practising in Wales are to be considered by the Royal Welsh Agricultural Society for its most prestigious prize, the 2010 Sir Bryner Jones Memorial Trophy.

The award is made annually to a different branch of Welsh agriculture and to the person who has attained the highest level of achievement in the chosen sector and this year for the first time since it was introduced in 1957 vets in Wales are eligible for the prize.   It will go to the veterinary surgeon adjudged to have made an outstanding contribution to Welsh agriculture.

“The role of veterinary surgeons has always been integral and important to farming in Wales where livestock are predominant and it is appropriate that the society should recognise them in this way,” said Royal Welsh Chief Executive, David Walters.

Nominations for the award will be made by the Royal Welsh county advisory committees throughout Wales who are also being asked to nominate candidates for this year’s Dr Emrys Evans Award.  The £2000 prize is a once-in-a-lifetime award given in memory of Dr Emrys Evans, chairman of the society’s board of management from 1999 to 2004.  It is made annually to a person who has contributed in an exceptional way to rural skills.  Nominees must be under 35 years old and live and work in Wales.

Shepherding is the theme for this year’s competition and the judges will be assessing nominees’ skills in animal husbandry including veterinary record keeping, shearing ability, working with sheepdogs and preparing sheep for market or for the show ring.

The closing date for nominations for both awards is April 6 2010.
