Dros 7000 o geisiadau da byw yn y Sioe Frenhinol

The popularity of native British breeds of cattle is reflected in the entries for this year’s Royal Welsh Show.  Compared with 2010 four traditional beef breeds – Hereford, South Devon, Aberdeen Angus and Longhorn – have all attracted increased numbers among the total of 948 cattle which will appear in the catalogue for the four-day show in July.

The white-faced Herefords lead the native breeds with 65 entries – up from 50 last year. However, it is the breeds of continental origin that dominate. British Limousins will be represented at the show by 156 entries while Holsteins top the dairy breeds with 80.  A total of 15 pedigree beef breeds and four dairy breeds will line up for judging together with 138 commercial beef cattle.

Sheep are a major attraction at the Royal Welsh Show and this year 45 breeds, the largest display of it kind in the world, can be seen on the showground at Llanelwedd.  British Texels top the numbers with 328 entries followed by Charollais with 178 and Beltex with 156.  Badger Faced Welsh Mountain (155) and Lleyn (144) are the front-runners among the Welsh breeds followed by Black Welsh Mountain with 129.

The Royal Welsh will once again be the event to visit to see the world’s best display of Welsh Ponies and Cobs which attracts visitors who travel from across the UK and overseas to watch these beautiful animals with their magnificent floating actions perform in the show ring.  A total of 540 Welsh Mountain Ponies (Section A) and 492

Welsh Cobs (Section D) lead the horse entries followed by Welsh Ponies of Cob Type with 344 and Welsh Ponies (Section B) with 220.

Strong entries totalling more than 3000 have been received for the 26 breeds in the horse section of the show including 18 for a new class for retrained race horses.

Pig entries at the show number 87, the Welsh breed topping the list with 28, followed by British Saddlebacks (23).

Ninety-six entries will be catalogued in the goat section – 67 Dairy and 29 Angora goats – and there are over 200 entries this year in the popular Young Handler competitions in which young stockmen demonstrate their skills at handling and presenting their animals in the show ring.
