Cystadleuaeth y Sioe Frenhinol yn chwilio am adeiladau fferm sydd orau ar gyfer anghenion yr 21ain ganrif

To the casual observer farm buildings in Wales whether modern or old appear, once established, to be seldom changing features of the landscape.  Frequently, however, they are altered, extended or adapted to meet the demands of changing farming systems and new technologies so that even the most traditional layouts may sometimes have been significantly redesigned to fit modern day requirements.

Some good examples of these types of development will be revealed by this year’s Royal Welsh Agricultural Society Farm Buildings and Works competition, which is seeking out buildings which best incorporate the farming needs of the 21st century.

The competition is confined to a different Welsh county each year and for 2011 it is open to entries from Caernarfon-Gwynedd, the feature county at this year’s Royal Welsh Show.

The judges will not be looking for elaborate schemes but for the integration of new buildings within the existing farmstead if appropriate, both in terms of efficiency and visual appearance.  When making their inspection they will attach importance to innovations involving the use of materials from other industries which have been adapted or modified for use on the farm and also to designs which are specifically intended to avoid or significantly reduce the pollution of soil, water or air.

There will be no limitation to the size of the farm or holding and no bias in favour of the amount of capital spent on the project.  Small schemes will have equal chance with large ones.

Entries for the competition close on March 25 2011 and although any scheme submitted must be located in Caernarfon-Gwynedd the owner may live elsewhere.  In fact, competitors need not necessarily to be the owner or occupier of the entry concerned but, if neither, they must obtain the owner’s or occupier’s consent to nominate the scheme and declare their interest in the entry.

The winner will be presented with the award – the Peniarth Estate Silver Trowel – together with a certificate during the Royal Welsh Show in July.
