Royal Welsh membership at record level

The Royal Welsh Agricultural Society is ending 2009 on a high note with membership at a record 15,804 and the host county of Glamorgan at the Royal Welsh Show raising over £302,000 for the society’s feature county fund.  Attendance at the show reached 220,023, the twenty-first time for the figure to exceed 200,000.  Coincidentally, it was in 1989 when Glamorgan also featured at the show, that visitor numbers first passed 200,000, the chairman of the board of management, David Lewis, told the society’s Council at Builth Wells.

But some huge challenges lie ahead, he said.

“I need not remind you that these are difficult times and, sadly, the show world is not immune from the recession.  In recent months we have witnessed the demise of the Royal of England, the Royal Lancashire, the Shropshire and West Midland and the Lowther Horse Trials.

“However, I am confident that with careful management our society will continue to develop and prosper,” Mr Lewis added.
