Grass is the most important crop in the economy of Welsh agriculture and Welsh livestock farmers are amongst the best in the world at growing it. Every year the Royal Welsh Agricultural Society and the Federation of Welsh Grassland Societies organise an all-Wales grassland farming competition, which is sponsored by HSBC Bank, to decide who among the entrants should receive the top prize.
This year’s winner farms in Powys and the award goes to A D Thomas of Upper Pendre, Llangorse, Brecon, a member of the Brecon Grassland Society. He receives the Federation of Welsh Grassland Society’s Perpetual Trophy and sponsorship to attend the British Grassland Society’s summer meeting.
The second prize winners are Dafydd and Mrs Glenys Jones of Penegoes, Machynlleth, members of the Bro Dyfi Grassland society, who receive a cash prize of £50.
The other three finalists in the competition are Berwyn Lloyd of Pencwm, Moylegrove, Cardigan (Cardigan and District Grassland Society), Timothy Simons of Cox Lake Farm, Narberth, Pembrokeshire (Narberth Grassland Society) and Einion Owen of Llanfaethlo, Holyhead, Anglesey (Anglesey Grassland Society).
The judges said they saw five excellent but very different farms and choosing the winner was a difficult decision. The lead judge, Heather McCalman of IBERS, said the winner showed swards in very good condition which produced high quality silage for a high yielding dairy herd.
The winner will receive the Federation’s trophy at a presentation of awards on the first day of the Royal Welsh Show.
