Enillydd ysgoloriaeth CAFC

The Royal Welsh Agricultural Society’s Bursary award for 2012 to enable a young person to attend the annual Oxford Farming Conference in January has been won by Menna Davies of Ciliau Aeron, Lampeter, Ceredigion.

Menna, a farmer’s daughter and winner of the Wales YFC Stockman of the Year title in 2009, was one of seven candidates nominated for the award. She is DairyCo’s Communications Officer for Wales and is editor of Godro, a newsletter for the Welsh dairy industry.

To qualify for the award nominees must be between 25 and 35 years old and working in a land-based industry.  Students and those who have received a Royal Welsh scholarship or any other student awards given in the last three years are ineligible.

In their report on this year’s applicants the judges said the task of selecting a winner for the bursary was becoming more difficult because of the improving quality of the candidates.  They said they were heartened to know that agriculture had so many young people who were keen to fight for the future of the industry and any one of those interviewed could have ably represented the society at the conference.

Menna said it would be an honour to attend the conference on behalf of the society at a time when the role of farming in producing affordable food, stimulating economic activity and protecting the planet had never been more important.

The winner, who will be invited to write an article for the 2012 Royal Welsh Journal, will be presented with the award on the opening day of the Royal Welsh Winter Fair, Monday November 28, in the Royal Welsh showground’s International Pavilion.
