RWAS - Ysgoloriaeth Waitrose i fyfyriwr o Sir Benfro
A Royal Welsh Agricultural Society scholarship supported by the supermarket Waitrose, aimed at encouraging students of merit to develop their potential through academic achievement, thereby fitting them to make a more effective contributon to the agricultural industry, has been won by Samuel Carey of Godre’r Grogwy, Rhoshill, Pembrokeshire.
A dairy farmer’s son with a variety of interests including amateur boxing, Samuel has followed an FdSc (equivalent to HND) course at Harper Adams University College including a year’s placement on a farm in Oxfordshire which gained him very high grades. In his final year Professional Research Project he looked at the possibility of diversifying on his home farm and setting up a regional soft cheese business. He wishes to return to Harper Adams to study for a BSc degree in agriculture.
He was one of four applicants for this year’s scholarship, all students who have completed their HND courses or equivalent, and are planning to progress to a BSc degree course. The judges said they were impressed by his knowledge and enthusiasm.
The scholarship fund of £3000 will be awarded annually by competitive selection and distributed at the discretion of the judges. It will be open to students who have lived in Wales for at least five years and who may have taken their diploma/foundation degree at any agricultural college and wish by merit qualification to proceed to a degree course in land based studies at any university college in England, Scotland or Wales.
