Atodlenni allan ar gyfer Ffair Aeaf

Over 5000 livestock schedules for the Royal Welsh Winter Fair, which takes place on Monday and Tuesday, November 29 and 30, on the showground at Llanelwedd, Builth Wells, have been sent out to exhibitors.  One hundred and seventy four classes and special awards are listed for cattle, sheep, pigs, horses and ponies.

New auctioneers have been appointed to conduct the sale of stock at the Fair.  McCartneys, who operate livestock auctions in Wales and the border counties, take over from Brightwells who were the official auctioneers at the Fair from its inception.  There is great anticipation about the positive effects McCartneys will have on the Fair and the RWAS is hoping their first auction will be a success.

The popularity of the Winter Fair as a showcase for the country’s leading stockmen saw cattle entries at last year’s event climb to 351, a record for the 20 years since the Fair was established in 1990.

As a result of the high entries, restrictions have been introduced by the Royal Welsh Agricultural Society on the number of entries in the Fair’s baby beef classes.  A maximum entry of four animals per exhibitor in the baby beef section, only two of which – one steer and one heifer – may be brought forward, has been ruled in to enable the tightly-packed main ring programme to run on time.

Royal Welsh Livestock Officer, Benjamin Williams, said so many entries were being received for the cattle classes that it had become impossible to accommodate all of them and restricting numbers had become inevitable.

“Because the Winter Fair is primarily a fatstock event it was felt more appropriate, although reluctantly, to curtail the baby beef animals which were considered show potential stock,” he said.
