Ymgeiswyr cryf yn Ffair Aeaf Sioe Frenhinol Cymru

Farmers exhibiting cattle and sheep at the Royal Welsh Winter Fair later this month are hoping that the present buoyant trade in livestock will be maintained when the sale of the prize winners takes place on November 29 on the showground at Llanelwedd, Builth Wells.

The enthusiasm of livestock producers from across the country and the aspirations of many to carry off a coveted prize from the show, which is regarded as the leading prime stock event in the UK, has again been demonstrated by the entries.

A total of 268 cattle have been catalogued for judging at the Fair led by 67 crossbred steers and 65 crossbred heifers.  There will also be strong competition among the exhibitors of baby beef heifers (52) and baby beef steers (38).  Entries in the exhibitor-bred champion section total 55.

There is also keen interest in the sheep classes at the Winter Fair and this year is no exception with 328 entries in the lambs (pairs) section while in the lamb carcass competition, another big attraction at the Fair among breeders and buyers, 111 entries have been received for singles and 28 for pairs.

Pig entries this year total 59, the highest since 2008.

Horses and ponies will be appearing in large numbers with a total of 614 entries.  The ubiquitous Welsh Mountain Ponies command top place numerically with 159 followed by Welsh Cobs (133), Welsh Ponies (80), Welsh Ponies of Cob Type (78) and Welsh Part Breds (60) ensure that native breeds dominate.  The popularity of Coloured Horses is reflected by an entry of 47 and Sport Horses are also well represented with 57.

The two-day Winter Fair takes place on Monday and Tuesday, November 28 and 29.
